Melbourne

Vickie Lee Hughes, 73, of Melbourne, passed away August 29, 2023.

Vickie Lee Hughes, age 73, of Melbourne passed away on August 29, 2023, surrounded by family. Vickie was born December 23, 1949, in Mobile, Alabama.

She leaves behind her loving husband of 34 years, Miller; daughters Mia Davis of Satellite Beach and Tori (Steve) Davison of Orlando; grandchildren, Koral Davis-Curtis of Melbourne and Devin (Sabrina) Davis of Winter Haven; and great grandchildren, Keeley Curtis and Cash Curtis. She also leaves behind sisters, Patricia Goode of Rockledge, Vicki Stanley of Daphne, AL, Shari Gleen of Birmingham, AL, and Michelle Scott of Daphne, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents Lexie "Roscoe" Register of Fort Morgan, AL, and Annie Mae Jones of Melbourne.

After living in Mobile for the first 16 years of her life, her family then moved around the country because her stepfather was in the military. Vickie lived in various states, finally settling down in Melbourne in 1983, where she met her husband Miller on a blind date on April 29th, 1983.

In Melbourne Vickie worked as the executive secretary to the Vice President of Gould Electronics (later Encore Computers) operations in Melbourne. But Vickie's real passion was residential house cleaning. Growing up with a stepfather who was a Chief Warrant Officer, Vickie was trained in military style spick-and-span cleaning.  After retiring from Gould, she later started her own house cleaning service. Vickie was no ordinary housecleaner; she was meticulous to the max in her cleaning. She only took on jobs in large homes that the owner wanted a thorough cleaning done and could take anywhere from 10 to 16 total hours, with the help of an assistant.

Vickie loved the outdoors, enjoying downhill snow skiing, canoeing and whitewater rafting after meeting Miller. The highlight of their rafting adventures was a 16-day trip on the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon on oar boats. Vickie travelled extensively throughout the US, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and Europe.

She loved her dogs and enjoyed dog sitting other people's dogs.  She always kept an eye out for lost dogs and would help find their owners, once interrupting an out-of-state vacation when she saw an abandoned dog on the side of a highway, staying with the dog until she found a shelter to take the dog in.

After meeting Miller, Vickie became a die-hard University of Alabama Crimson Tide fan.  She attended 1 or 2 Bama games a year, and went to SEC Championship and National Champinoship games, including the 2015 and 2017 National Championship games.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
