Journal Of Life
Vashti Skerritt (Reid) nicknamed Doris was born on November 10, 1932 on the beautiful Leeward Island
Of Montserrat, W.I.
As a child she was proud, fashionable, haughty, extremely proudful and different in how she accompanied friends.
During her childhood she faced death after having a fever where her friends, family and the neighborhood did not think she would survive. The pastor of their church visited to explain death, pray with her, she stated she was not afraid of death since she grew up in a faith believing Christian home, she knew that she would meet Jesus.
In her early teen years, she had the opportunity from her aunt Nenzie Allen to embark upon a job opportunity in the Netherlands. She went to the Netherlands working with a family who were partner/owners of Coca-Cola company. The family was also connected to the New York City office. This gave her the opportunity to travel to New York City every 3 months as well as the Netherlands.
Thereafter she went to England to stay with her brother Clackie Skerritt, there she visited a jazz club with her cousin Fred Allen and met a handsome man named John Reid. John thought that she was her sister Masie Samuels because they looked alike, although Masie was an established teacher in her country of birth, married, and had a successful life. She eventually married John Reid on the Isle of Man.
She started to invite her family to the U.K. for work opportunities; Dan, Dottie, Dora, Luis as well as her sister-in-law Irene Reid and Sarah White. They were all happy and successful. Eventually she left England and went to Canada where she re-united with her sister Josephine, an established business woman. She later travelled back to New York City where she embarked on a career as a fashion designer/tailor working in the fashion district in New York City, as well as tailoring for friends. As a hobby, she loved cake baking, and make cakes for special events for others, she learned decorating cakes from her brother-in-law Pete Chinnery. She furthered her education to Nursing, and eventually was a very happy grand-mother.
While in New York City as a faith based Christian, she participated in the growth and advancement for many churches and people for enhancement in life. In Harlem AME Church with Pastor Williams, Bronx Pentecostal Deliverance Center with Paster Isaiah Jones working with Reverend Schambach, Bishop/Pastor Dr. Reid of City of Faith in the Bronx.
She eventually lived in California with her cousin Fred Allen and participated in Bishop Noel, Greater Bethany Community Church leading to City of Refuge Church. She later retired in Florida spending time with her sister Esther (nickname Dora), until she lived independently. She visited many churches with her fiancé Roger Higman, who sends his love and condolences to the family. She later attended Palm Bay Seven Day Adventist Church under the leadership of Pastor Wintley Phipps until her health declined and her death.
She passed away on January 28, 2026. May her soul rest in peace.
In loving memory, she leaves her daughter Lorraine Reid, son Tayfield Reid, her grandson Ramon Redarez, many sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews. In God’s love Amen
