James Edward Cox, born April 19, 1970, in Rockledge, Florida, passed away in the early morning of
August 2, 2022, after years of courageously battling renal
disease. James was a force of nature as a linebacker for
Cocoa High School and continued to use the visionary,
tough, and gritty nature he developed on the field to
tackle whatever life threw at him.
Embodying the strong work ethic exhibited by his
Bahamian immigrant parents during his upbringing,
James excelled in positions at Spartech Marine, Sea Ray
Boats, and Kennedy Space Center before finding his true
passion in the shipping and receiving industry. James was
a dockworker at Port Canaveral for over 16 years and a
proud member of the International Longshoreman’s
Association Local 1359-1860.
James loved spending time with his family and friends, as
well as his cane corso Luke. He was a stylish man and an
aficionado of custom cars and boats. He had an avid love
of sports, cooking, and music. He was happiest when he
was out fishing and boating on the Indian River Lagoon.
His wit was razor sharp, and he was known to say the most
outrageous thing he could think of in hopes of helping
you see a new perspective. He constantly made everyone
laugh with his silly sounds and sayings.
Everyone James knew will greatly cherish his impact on
their lives, either through love, friendship, mentorship, or
his humor. He was a man of unshakable conviction. He
was a man of integrity and honor. He was a hardworking,
resilient figure in the face of adversity and a person who
provided exemplary effort in everything he did until his
last breath. He loved fiercely and deeply, and we take
comfort in knowing that James is now at peace surrounded
by the love of his parents, Levinna and Osborne Cox, Sr.;
sister, Nellie Hanna-Cox; brother, Osborne Cox, Jr.; and
nephews, Jason Hanna and Osborne “Ozzy” Cox III, all
of whom passed before him.
Left to cherish his fond memories are: his wife of 22
years, Shevelle Cox; children, James Cox, Jr., Brandon
Cox, Jamesha Cox, and Jade Cox; sisters, Ida Cox and
Margaret Cox; brother, Timothy Cox; sister-in-law, Joy
Cox; nieces and nephews, Halbert Hanna, Janet Hanna
Denton, Darlene Hanna, Gideon Hanna, Shareline
Hanna, Osborne Hanna, Ansel Hanna, Chenequa Cox Glover, Dashauna Cox, Tiko Cox, Tra’von Cox, Brandon
Johnson, Cameron Cox, Leon Allen, Jeremy Cox, Joshua
Tyson, Jatavious Cox, and Victoria Cox; and a host of
cousins, other relatives, and true friends who loved him
for who he was.
