Florencia Evelina Haywood-Fenton, affectionately known as “Flo,” “Mommy,” and “Omi” to those who loved her, transitioned peacefully while surrounded by family on Thursday, February 11, 2021 in Palm Bay, Florida following a prolonged illness.
Born on April 15, 1951 to Ivan Elroy Haywood and Linda Eaton Nedrick Haywood, Florencia lived and grew up in the Canal Zone, Republic of Panamá. At age 16, she traveled to the United States which became her home—living in New York. There she met the love of her life, Clarence F. Fenton, Jr. They married on January 11, 1974, and together they had two children, Jamal and Jamila. They lived together in Jersey City, New Jersey before relocating to Miami, Florida in 1979. In 1993, the family survived a catastrophic category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Andrew, which destroyed their home and allowed them to relocate to Palm Bay, Florida. There, Florencia would live the remainder of her days. One of her proudest accomplishments was being a wife, mother and “Omi” (grandmother). She was a wise, generous, nurturing and kind mother, sister and friend and a loving, steadying force to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
In addition to loving others well, Florencia was a brilliant, educated and eloquent leader, teacher and speaker. Ever the learner, she graduated from Springfield Gardens High, Brooklyn Community College, and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. She applied her formal education in her professional role as a dedicated and decorated employee of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Then after relocating to Palm Bay, Florida, she began a successful career with Brevard County Board of County Commissioners. She was promoted multiple times until she became the County Risk Manager as well as an All Lines Claims Adjuster. She continued to lead and serve until her retirement after 30 years of service to the State of Florida.
Florencia loved and was a true friend of the Lord Jesus Christ throughout her life. Many would describe her as a mystic and an anointed spiritual teacher/mentor. She became a scholar of the Word of God, and faithfully served the Lord and His people through various ministries and community organizations and functions. As an ordained minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, she began teaching His Word to students through comprehensive Bible studies and worship services. This became a weekly passion and ministry with far-reaching and eternal impact—her greatest joy and a beautiful offering to the Lord and her students in her later years.
As if all these wonderful attributes weren’t enough, Florencia was an extremely gifted, classically-trained musician. At a young age, she was a highly sought after pianist and singer in Panamá. She continued offering that gift when she attended a conservatory of the arts upon arriving in New York City. Then she became a vocal coach and guiding force to her daughter in whom she nurtured and encouraged the gift even further. In addition to loving music, Florencia enjoyed dancing, traveling, fine dining, and sharing her love of God with family and friends.
Florencia will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by her husband and dearest friend, Clarence Fitzroy Fenton, Jr. of Palm Bay, FL; her cherished children, Jamal Omar Fenton and Jamila Olufemi Page (Rich) of Redding, CA; five step-children, Clarence “Roy,” Bridgette, Jose, Eduardo, and Reinerio; two siblings, Ivan “Ardo” (Anna), Xeneida (Alan); her two beloved cousins, Leovigilda (Aurelio) and Sandra (Ricardo); five grandchildren, Jazmyn, Denver, Joy, Jahmai and Rachel; her life-long best friend Mercedes Brown as well as a host of adopted grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws and loved ones (family, friends, students and colleagues).
