Honoring a Virtuous Woman, Dorothy M. Eubanks Hardin

From her conception God ordained her to be a blessing and named her Dorothy, “God’s gift”. Given to smile, abounding in laughter, her presence filled the room with comfort, warmth and joy. Giving was her nature, and she gave liberally with thoughtfulness, always remembering others with care and concern. Everyone’s birthday and special occasions were acknowledged and/or attended. She possessed a steel trap mind and was truly the family’s historian. Her circle of friends was large, for she never met a stranger, only a friend she hadn’t met before. Dorothy was the pillar of the family and carried that position with dignity, moral conviction and loyalty.

She was the first born of nine children to Hattie Pierce and Goldie Master Eubanks. She was born in St. Augustine, Florida on March 1, 1943. She attended Excelsior Elementary School (grades 1-7) and Richard Jerome Murray High School (grades 8-12), graduating in 1961. Early life in St. Augustine was shaped by God fearing parents, centering the Church of God on Palmo Street into her daily devotion. As a young adult, the social issues of the Civil Rights movement molded her voice and adult leadership. She participated in many protests, sit-ins and marches (notably one which jailed her for 3 days with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.).

After graduating from Florida Normal College (now Florida Memorial College) in May 1965 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education (BES), Dorothy moved to Cocoa, Florida and began her teaching career at Poinsett Elementary School, instructing 3 rd graders. Teaching wasn’t just an occupation to her; she had a heart for children and her “God given gifts” impacted students and teachers wherever she went. Her teaching career was an easy transition to grandparenting. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Grandma D.” They were the recipients of her best instruction and greatest favor. She taught them spelling, mathematics and card games (UNO and Tunk). They had a way of communicating all their own that often ended with belly-aching laughter. She set the example of faith, strength and endurance they will never forget.

Dorothy met and married her Love, Joe Daniel Hardin, an Airman in the United States Air Force November 5, 1965. Joe’s military duties afforded Dorothy many travel opportunities to Whiteman A.F.B., Missouri, Charleston A.F.B., South Carolina and even Karamursel, Turkey. She believed in the core principle, “You reap what you sow.” Her favorite songs were Precious Lord Take My Hand and In the Garden.
