We all have an appointment to keep, set for a designated date and time. It cannot be canceled, rescheduled, or changed. Chrystaline Cecile Sherwood-Saul answered that call on May 22, 2025, at 5:55 p.m.

Chrystaline, known to her friends and family as “Una,” was born on July 16, 1937, in Georgetown, Guyana. She was the only child of Thomas Sylvanis Joe and Esther Alberta Fowler-Joe. Though her parents came from humble beginnings, they were rich in ways that could not be measured by material possessions. From them, Una inherited a deep legacy of faith, family, character, sophistication, and compassion. She was a firm disciplinarian, yet she was also fun-loving, warm, and kind.

Una attended Smith’s Church Congregational School and later went on to Tutorial High School. In 1956, she met and fell madly in love with a local police officer, Viscount Sherwood-Saul, affectionately known as Harry. They were married at St. George’s Cathedral on February 1, 1958, and remained happily united until his passing in 2015. Their loving union was blessed with five children.

To create a life filled with opportunity and promise for their children, Una and Harry later emigrated from Guyana to the United States. They settled in Vailsburg, New Jersey, and after retirement, moved to Florida. Their grandson, Mycal, relocated from Washington, D.C., to help care for his grandparents. He supported them both until Harry’s passing and continued to care for Una until her final move to Ohio, where she lived with her daughter, Holis, and son-in-law, Thomas.

Family was Una’s life. Today, her children and their children remember a woman whose legacy lives on in every act of love she taught them, every prayer she whispered, and every moment she gave selflessly to her family.

Una was a devoted Christian who accepted Christ at an early age. She attended St. Philip’s Church, where her life and character reflected the teachings and values of her faith. On any given day, you could find her reading her Bible, The Daily Word, or Unity devotionals.

Extended family members who held a special place in her heart include Nancy and Clifford Loncke, Jean and Raymond Wyatt, Cecil and Cheryl, Sharon and the Millington family, Joycelyn, Jacqueline, Gladwyn, and Clothilde. Among her lifelong and cherished friends are Lynette, Baby Morris, Ena, Myrna, Ellen, Karen, Marla, Yvonne, Gloria, Joseph and Cicily, Esme, Bernice, and the Samuels family. She will be missed deeply by many more relatives and close friends whose lives she touched with grace, generosity, and love

Una truly embodied the meaning of a life well lived. She had a zest for life that was infectious and a spirit that could not be broken. She found joy in the simplest things and, in doing so, taught those around her to appreciate the little moments that make life beautiful. She often said she was not afraid to die, and today, we find comfort in knowing she is at peace.

Una’s life was exceptional in many ways. She was the very essence of compassion and was remarkably loyal. Her heart was warm and welcoming, a place where everyone felt loved and accepted. She enjoyed her Guyanese cuisine, especially pastries, white/black pudding, roti and curry, and cook–up rice.

Una’s friendships touched every part of her life, and each one was special to her. She was known not only for enjoying her friends, but for being a true friend in return. Alongside her close friends, she formed a group they lovingly called “The Sunshine Girls,” which included Lynette, Ona, Aileen, Millicent, Audrey, and Barbara. They traveled together, shared meals and celebrations, supported community efforts, and stood by one another through life’s joys and sorrows. Una believed that friendships, like gardens, require care and attention, and she was always willing to go beyond what was expected.

Chrystaline was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Viscount “Harry” Sherwood-Saul, her parents, Thomas Sylvanis Joe and Esther Alberta Fowler-Joe, and other cherished loved ones who have gone before her.

She leaves to celebrate her memory her children: Dawn, Holis “Shawn” and her husband Thomas, Victor, Viscount Jr. “Patrick” and his wife Genelle, and Raoul. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Damien, Mycal, Detwanna, Ananda, Tiayona, Ciara, India, Amir, and Jordyn. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Anita Sherwood-Saul and Joan Saul, and her nieces: Allison, Cecile, Kay, Marcelle, Vanessa, and Marlene.
